At Nolan James Center Foundation, we understand that the commitment to stay in treatment can be difficult. The evidence however strongly suggests that staying in treatment for an extended period of time gives the best chance of success. One of the key factors which has been shown to improve treatment outcomes is the degree of support from family and friends.
Nolan James Centre Foundation recognizes that family involvement is important, and so, where appropriate, we encourage active involvement of parents and/or spouses as part of our clients’ treatment program. We believe that the family of origin often has a vital role to play in the treatment of substance abuse. At Nolan James Centre Foundation we use two key evidence based approaches; The ‘Family Systems Model’ and ‘Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy’.
Family Systems Model
The ‘Family Systems Model’ suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another. Families are ‘systems’ of interconnected and independent individuals, none of whom can be understood apart from the system. In working with the family we address very sensitive issues such as family rules and roles, communication dynamics, co-dependency and enabling and the concept of ‘boundaries’ within the system.
Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy
The ‘Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy’ (or CBFT) approach is firmly grounded on the cognitive model of psychopathology, and it seeks to restructure the family and the unhealthy behaviors that either contribute to, or encourage, the client’s substance abuse. The therapeutic focus is placed on the reciprocal nature of family members’ thoughts and beliefs about the addict and addiction, and the resultant behaviors and emotions.
A typical day at Nolan James Centre Foundation
Our treatment facility is located in Kisumu. This great home has been re-appropriated as Kenya’s leading rehabilitation facilities. Like any other residential facility, Nolan runs a very structured and organized daily schedule in order to minimize stress among the clients. This focus on structure also allows our clients to develop the habits of a healthy routine that will constitute the cornerstone of their life in recovery, long after their time with us. Nolan provides a safe and supportive environment in which these habits can be forged.
At Nolan James Centre Foundation, your days will be a busy and productive combination of scheduled activities and individual written work. Most days start with something for the physical or spiritual you, such as a flexibility session, workout, or a meditation session. This is followed by a nutritious breakfast.
From breakfast until dinner you will have a combination of Psycho-educational and Process Group therapy sessions, followed by a physical workout session. You will also receive individual therapy sessions with your focal counselor, who will be a specialist in therapy for addictions. Dinner is followed by a ‘check-out’ session, where everyone shares how their day went and what they did or did not accomplish, as well as any challenges faced and lessons learned for the day.
On the weekends the pace is a little slower, and whilst there are still group therapy sessions, the program also allows for some free time, where you can just relax and enjoy your surroundings. At this time we will also take you to pick up any personal necessities you need from the shops.
